How Do You Grow Cannabis at Home?
Home growing requires selecting seeds or clones, providing proper lighting, soil or hydro media, nutrients, and maintaining correct temperature, humidity, and light cycles through vegetative and flowering stages.
Growing cannabis at home is legal in many states that have legalized cannabis, typically allowing 3-6 plants per person or 6-12 per household. Before starting, verify your state and local laws regarding plant counts, where plants can be grown (many require indoor or non-visible cultivation), and whether a medical card is required. Home growing can be a rewarding hobby that produces high-quality cannabis at a fraction of dispensary prices.
Setting up a basic indoor grow requires several key components. A grow tent (4x4 feet is a popular starting size) provides a controlled environment with reflective interior walls. Lighting is the most important investment — LED grow lights have become the standard for home growers due to their energy efficiency, low heat output, and full-spectrum light production. A quality LED light for a 4x4 tent costs $200-600. You also need an exhaust fan with carbon filter for odor control, oscillating fans for air circulation, and basic environmental monitoring equipment for temperature and humidity.
The growing medium determines your approach. Soil growing is the most beginner-friendly method, using quality cannabis-specific soil or super soil that contains organic amendments and beneficial microorganisms. Coco coir (coconut fiber) is a popular soilless medium that offers faster growth and more control over nutrients. Hydroponic systems (deep water culture, ebb and flow, or drip systems) provide the fastest growth rates and highest yields but require more knowledge and monitoring. For first-time growers, organic soil in fabric pots (3-5 gallon) is the most forgiving approach.
The cannabis life cycle consists of four main phases. Germination (3-7 days) involves sprouting seeds in damp paper towels or directly in soil. The seedling stage (2-3 weeks) requires gentle light and careful watering. The vegetative stage (4-8 weeks for indoor) uses an 18/6 light schedule (18 hours on, 6 hours off) while plants develop structure and foliage. The flowering stage (8-12 weeks depending on strain) is triggered by switching to a 12/12 light schedule, during which buds develop and mature.
Essential growing practices include maintaining proper pH (6.0-7.0 in soil, 5.5-6.5 in hydro), providing appropriate nutrients at each stage, training plants (low-stress training, topping, or ScrOG) to maximize light exposure and yields, monitoring for pests and diseases, and maintaining environmental conditions (70-85F during vegetation, 65-80F during flowering, with relative humidity dropping from 60-70% in veg to 40-50% in late flower). First-time growers should expect to invest $500-1,500 in equipment and can typically harvest 4-16 ounces per plant depending on conditions and technique.
