Medical Cannabis Prescription in North Macedonia

North Macedonia legalized medical cannabis in 2016, becoming one of the first countries in Southeast Europe to do so. The government has actively promoted cannabis cultivation for export, granting numerous licenses to domestic and international companies. The country’s favorable climate and low production costs have attracted significant foreign investment.

Domestic patient access is straightforward compared to many European countries, with any licensed physician able to prescribe. However, medical cannabis costs are not covered by health insurance, and product availability can be inconsistent, particularly in smaller towns and rural areas. The focus has largely been on the export market rather than domestic patient care.
