Cannabis in Denmark

Denmark has developed one of Europe's most sophisticated medical cannabis frameworks, combining a domestic pilot prescription program with a robust cannabis cultivation and export industry. The medical cannabis pilot program was launched in January 2018 as a four-year trial and has been subsequently extended. Under the program, physicians can prescribe cannabis products for patients with conditions where conventional treatments have been insufficient.

Denmark's cannabis cultivation industry has become a significant player in the European market. The Danish Medicines Agency issues licenses for the cultivation, processing, and export of medical cannabis, and several large-scale operations have been established across the country. The regulatory framework emphasizes EU-GMP compliance and pharmaceutical-grade production standards, positioning Denmark as a premium producer of medical cannabis for European distribution.

The northern Zealand town of Christiania, founded in 1971 as a freetown commune in Copenhagen, has been famous for its open cannabis trade on "Pusher Street" for decades. While technically illegal, this open market was tolerated for years before increased enforcement began in the 2010s. Christiania remains a symbol of Danish cannabis culture and a popular tourist attraction.

Recreational cannabis remains illegal in Denmark, with possession for personal use punishable by fines. There has been limited political momentum toward recreational legalization, with the Social Democrat-led government prioritizing other policy areas. However, the success of the medical program and growing European reform momentum may eventually shift the political landscape.
