Thailand became the first Southeast Asian country to legalize medical cannabis in 2018, marking a dramatic shift for a country known for some of the region's strictest drug laws. In June 2022, Thailand went further by decriminalizing cannabis entirely, removing it from the narcotics list. This effectively created a legal gray area where cannabis could be grown, sold, and consumed without clear regulations, leading to a rapid proliferation of cannabis shops across the country, particularly in tourist areas.
